DUAL COMBUSTION THERMAL HYBRID ENGINE
A careful and conservative analysis shows that an engine system consisting of an internal combustion engine that is operated fuel rich, coupled with an exhaust afterburner, a steam boiler, and a steam engine, will propel an automobile with half the fuel consumption of the present internal combustion engine equipped with emission controls. The emission level of the new combination will meet the 1980 goals. This improved emissions performance is the consequence of the low NOx productoin in the richly carbureted internal combustion engine and the full consumption of combustible pollutants in the afterburner.
