FAULT DIAGNOSIS/ON-CONDITION MAINTENANCE
A proposal is made for a "new approach" to the annual classification inspections of ships, based on the application of sophisticated condition monitoring systems developed for high technology sciences. Fault detection methods used in various industries to provide warning of incipient failure in machinery systems are considered in three main groups. i.e. (a) static dynamic testing when the plant or machinery is at rest; (b) dynamic monitoring using signals produced by the plant or machinery while operating, and (c) performance trend monitoring based on the inter-relationships of thermodynamic or fluid-dynamic parameters. Static methods briefly reviewed include stress wave emission testing, proton scattering radiography and thermal imaging. The general principles of methods for vibration and sonic monitoring are outlined with particular reference to discrete frequency analysis for which equations are presented. Methods for the detection and analysis of contaminants in lubricating oils and hydraulic fluids are briefly described. The increasing use of computers and mini-computers for performance trend monitoring in ships is then discussed, and the paper concludes with an example of the cost saving which can be achieved by effective fault diagnosis/on-condition maintenance.
