LOADING AT SEA MADE SAFER

Risks inherent in loading and unloading cargoes at sea are claimed to be reduced when a crane control system, known as the KM Load Transfer, is used. It is believed to be the only system of its kind to incorporate an electronic unit for calculating the best instant for lift-off from a pitching deck. The system is also claimed to speed loading operations, and can be used effectively in almost all weathers. It ensures automatically that every lift that the crane makes is started from the peak of a heave motion and when the cable is taut. This eliminates the possibility of both snatching and entanglement with the supply boat alongside. Also, when backloading to a pitching deck, constant tension is maintained automatically from the first moment of contact with a heave motion. This allows the deckhand to unshackle the load safely by using the control rope attached to the hook unit to create slack in the loading slings. Controls for the system allow the crane driver to alternate instantly and smoothly between automatic and manual operation by pressing a button on the hoist control joystick.
