THE BULK FREIGHT SHIPPER'S POINT OF VIEW--A SURVEY ON TRANSPORTATION

This report presents the results of a survey of Canadian bulk shippers. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: a structured set of questions covering five topics (perceived captivity of the shipper; perceived competition among available transport services; price, reliability, and quality of available transport services; significance of transport costs as a function of commodity value; and expected future costs trends in transport costs as a function of commodity values) and a section where shippers were asked to describe in their own words the transportation problems they faced and their impact on operations, as well as any possible solution they foresaw. These comments and data were then categorized, tabulated, and where possible, comparisons of opinions were made to reflect differences arising from varying shipper location, mode(s) employed and industrial community in which the shipper operated. Each of the five topics in the structured part of the questionnaire, plus a selection of comments from the unstructured part, are summarized.
