OCEAN TRADE AND TRANSPORT OF PHOSPHATE ROCK

World trade in phosphate rock has increased greatly since the early 1960's. An estimated 90% of the tonnage moving internationally is seaborne, and hence phosphate rock, which is predominantly transported in bulk, provides an important shipping cargo. In fact in 1976, seaborne trade in phosphate rock was the fifth largest among the major bulks, after iron ore, grain, coal and bauxite/alumina. The phosphate rock trade is characterised by relatively low transport costs and the ocean freight and handling charges tend to break up the world market into largely self-contained regional markets, each with its own pattern of supply. The object is to review the development of trade as a whole and the future pattern of phosphate shipments within the regional markets, as well as the ocean transportation of phosphate rock.
