PREPARATION AND PAINTING OF SHIPS' HULLS. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TYPE OF SHOP PRIMER TO THE CORROSION PROTECTION OF SHIP'S BOTTOMS--EXPERIENCE FROM SEA-GOING VESSELS

Data on a number of ships built of shop primer coated steel have been collected from shipyards and from shipowners' drydocking reports. Most of the ships were built in Scandinavia. The aim was to find out whether different types of shop primers behave differently on sea-going vessels. During the first three years of the ship's life no significant difference in corrosion damage was reported for ships with different types of shop primers. The tendency towards blistering and flaking, however, was more pronounced on ships with a zinc dust shop primer. The relevance of the information in dry docking reports is discussed and it is suggested that shipping companies arrange for special test areas on each vessel.
