EMERGENCY ESCAPE BREATHING APPARATUS FOR SHIPS

A description is given of a self-contained Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus developed by the Mine Safety Appliances Company to provide the entire crew of all (U.S.) Navy surface ships with respiratory protection while escaping from any interior space to the weather deck. This re-breather apparatus comprises a canister containing potassium superoxide, a breathing bag with associated mouthpiece, noseclip, and valve; and a hood for eye and head protection. It can be donned and activated in 10 seconds, weighs 2.2 kg, and is designed for an effective duration of 15 minutes under active (escape) conditions.
