THE RISE AND RISE OF CAPABILITY BROWN
The article presents a profile of Richard Brown, now commercial director of the National Express Group (NEG). From a beginning at British Rail as a marketing and planning trainee, with the frustrations of government control, Richard Brown later became a director of the profitable InterCity business before the responsibility of preparing Midland Mainline for transfer to the private sector, then National Express ownership. Now as commercial director overseeing NEG's refranchising programme, Richard Brown has called for a 'partial' vertical integration with Railtrack on some parts of the network to prevent an overlap of responsibilities. Views are expressed concerning Railtrack's response to operators following the Hatfield disaster. With UK rail franchises increased from 5 to 9, NEG is the largest UK train operator and Richard Brown is confident that work at NEG will result in rail travel playing an increasingly important role in overcoming transport problems.
