ACCELERATION AND STEADY-STATE PROPULSION DYNAMICS OF A GAS TURBINE SHIP WITH CONTROLLABLE-PITCH PROPELLER

A propulsion dynamics investigation of a single-screw destroyer escort ship with a controllable pitch propeller driven by two gas turbines in a combined gas-turbine base and gas-turbine boost (COGAG) arrangement is presented in this paper. Results of the all-digital simulation conducted with both cavitating and noncavitating propeller data include: steady-state powering characteristics, pitch/rpm and fuel rate optimization, low-speed performance, and acceleration dynamics with single engine, twin engine, and base-boost combinations. For the acceleration dynamics investigation with many conditions of engines, power, and pitch ratios, a number of ship and propulsion system variables were computed as a function of time during maneuvers. Speed, head reach, and engine and transmission system torques and thrusts were analyzed and tabulated for various conditions of acceleration. The paper includes experimental propeller data, equations, and a simulation model; however, the results are limited to ahead steady-state and acceleration conditions.
