FUNDAMENTAL STUDY OF UNDERWATER WELDING

M.I.T. Department of Ocean Engineering is currently conducting a research program to analyze fundamental mechanisms of underwater welding. This paper stresses the need for a reliable underwater "wet" welding process and points out the value of fundamental research in this area. Boiling heat transfer and arc bubble models are proposed. Results are evaluated by using these models to determine temperature distributions developed while welding thin plates. Empirical results are compared to those predicted by using a finite difference numerical technique.
