SAFETY STUDY FOR THE DULLES PRT

Four PRT (personal rapid transit) systems being installed for the TRANSPO exposition have been examined in a limited safety analysis. A study was made of the concepts upon which the systems are based and, to a limited extent, the manner in which the concepts are implemented. It is recommended that an operator be on duty at a control position of each of the 4 PRT systems during TRANSPO, that he be familiar with the system and its operation, and that he be prepared to assume control of the system if necessary to ensure passenger safety. This recommendation is not a condemnation of the PRT systems; portions of each of the systems have been identified which are vital to passenger safety and those vital portions of the systems have not been studied sufficiently to determine if they are implemented safely. /Author/
