HULL ROUGHNESS AND SURFACE DETERIORATION OF SHIPS BUILT SINCE 1965

It is suggested that the hull roughness mean apparent amplitude (MAA) of a new ship should not exceed 125 mum/50 mm sampling length and reasons are given for the unsatisfactory percentage of new construction which continues to enter with poor surface finish. Hull surface "MAA" tends to deteriorate at a rate of approximately 25 mum/50 mm per annum.
