APPLICATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF A SHIPBOARD AIRBORNE NOISE HANDBOOK
A general purpose handbook has been prepared for use in U.S. Naval surface ship airborne noise control during the ship design process. Machinery noise source level estimating formulae, acoustic properties of shipboard approved material and simplified worksheet examples are presented. This paper discuss the limitations and accuracy of the computational techniques employed citing a number of potential ship construction deficiencies. It is suggested that the handbook, in solving the routine noise problems, may create contractual difficulties more complex and costly than the solved airborne noise problems.
