ECONOMIC IMPACT OF FOR-HIRE AND PRIVATE TRUCKING IN MANITOBA: 1998 RESULTS AND METHODOLOGY

The absence of accurate economic indicators in the trucking industry and related activities has led to an underappreciation of the importance of this sector. The structure of the trucking industry, to some degree, helps to explain its lack of public profile. Because it is so diverse, there are few large companies in trucking that are easily recognizable to the public. This and other reasons for the generally "low profile" of the trucking industry in the public consciousness are discussed in this paper. Also, the analysis contained herein sets a new standard for the estimation of economic impacts. In addition to an aggregate measure of the for-hire and private trucking sectors, this study ties the economic impact to a structural profile of the industry. This work aims to provide one of the first studies focusing on the economic impact of trucking for a North American jurisdiction in an accurate and comprehensive manner.
