RAIL TRANSIT INNOVATIONS

Some of the rail transit innovations examined in this article include diesel multiple unit cars (DMUs), linear induction propulsion motors, and low floor light rail vehicles. In the United States, DMUs are presently in operation in Camden and Trenton, New Jersey; San Diego; Salt Lake City; and under plans in North Carolina and Oregon. LIM (linear induction motors) have not yet made inroads in the United States, despite successes in other parts of the world. Low floor light rail vehicles first appeared in Geneva, Switzerland in 1984, but they too are making slow entry here.
