STATEWIDE DISAGGREGATE ATTITUDINAL MODELS FOR PRINCIPAL MODE CHOICE

This report documents the calibration of statewide disaggregate Logit mode choice models incorporating both attitudinal and socioeconomic variables. A data set was obtained from a random sample of 1,000 households in New York State; models were developed for work and nonwork trips for upstate New Yorkers; and nonwork trips for both NYC and the entire State. After an extensive screening process using a stepwise linear regression program, auto availability and possession of a driver's license were found to be the major determiners of mode choice. Attitudinal variables, such as importance ratings of characteristics that influence mode choice, added little to model strengths, thus confirming the results of other researchers. Results indicate that it is possible to construct statistically strong disaggregate mode choice models, suitable for forecasting on the statewide level, using a small sample data set. /Author/
