TRAVEL DEMAND AT THE 1980 WINTER OLYMPICS ESTIMATION ANALYSIS

This report provides forecasts of travel volumes for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The peak hour travel demand is estimated for each of five time periods for every day of the Olympics, using the tentative schedule developed by the Lake Placid Olympic organizing committee. Results indicate that the peak one-hour period will be Monday, February 18, 1980, 3-4 p.m. During this period, approximately 24,000 trips will be made between sites or villages in the Olympic area. The report describes a bus circulation system to serve these trips using approximately 450 buses. The study notes that it will be almost impossible to serve this number of trips if a significant number of automobiles are permitted in the area, and further suggests that the highway capacity problems may even prevent the hypothetical bus system from providing adequate service.
