TRANSPORTATION PLANNING FOR THE 1980 WINTER OLMPIC GAMES

This report summarizes part of the transportation planning effort for the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York. The area facilities are described as well as the planning organization structure. A projection is made of travel demand to the Olympic area and a scenario describing possible route and modal choices by Olympic visitors is outlined. Peak-hour travel demand is estimated for every day of the Olympics. Results indicate that during the highest peak period approximately 24,000 trips will be made between event sites or villages in the Olympic area. The report also describes a bus circulation system to serve these trips using approximately 450 buses. The study found that it will be difficult to serve this number of trips if a high percentage of the Olympic area travel is by automoible, and further suggests that the highway capacity problems may even prevent the hypothetical bus system from providing adequate service during some of the highest peak hours. /Author/
