RADAR IMAGE ANALYSIS FOR SUBSURFACE VOID DETECTION BY THE MICROWAVE POLARIZATION METHOD

Existence of voids under the pavements or tunnel linings results in the deterioration of pavements or tunnels. To effectively detect those voids by non-destructive tests, one method using radar is proposed. This research is devoted to quantitatively evaluate the efficiency of the non-destructive test by radar for detecting voids under pavements and behind tunnel linings. At the fundamental stage of this research, to acquire the directional information and to estimate the volume of three-dimensional voids by using three-dipole antenna, the investigation on microwave polarization methods is carried out by changing voids orientation and void geometry. As the result indicated, it was clarified that the response of microwave polarization mode varies with the change of void geometry and thus there is a possibility to identify the geometry and orientation of specific voids by the microwave polarization method. Besides, with the addition of supplement method for acquiring thickness of voids, the availability to estimate the volume of three-dimensional voids was investigated.
