COLD-MIX ASPHALT CONCRETE SURFACING
The increasing attractiveness of emulsified asphalt from ecological and energy conservation viewpoints precipitated this study of the performance of dense-graded and open-graded asphalt concrete surface courses containing emulsified asphalt. A total of two (each) test sections containing dense-graded and open graded cold mix were constructed and their performance monitored for one to five years. In addition, several cold-mix pavements placed in Oregon and Washington were viewed and some laboratory mix design work completed toward the development of an improved mix design procedure for cold-mixed dense-graded asphalt concrete. It was concluded that the field curing problems associated with dense-graded cold-mix AC surfacing would preclude their use for most Caltrans paving and that the use of cold-mix open-graded AC offers the possibility of being a viable alternate to hot mix, particularly in remote locations. The construction of additional cold-mix open-graded test sections is recommended.
