EVALAUTION OF THE KALANIANAOLE HIGHWAY CARPOOL/BUS LANE
This report presents the results of an evaluation study of the carpool/bus lane on the Kalanianaole Highway, located in Honolulu, Hawaii. This 2.4 mile (3.9 km) priority lane facility is a contraflow lane on a four-lane undivided highway for 1.9 miles (3.0 km) and a withflow lane for the remainder of its length. The carpool/bus lane is identified with traffic cones and portable signs and is in operation on weekday mornings only. The effectiveness of this carpool/buslane is evaluated with nine specific criteria: mode split, vehicular and passenger traffic volumes, traffic performance characteristics, effectiveness of traffic control devices, traffic safety, operational problems related to design features, project economics, public attitudes, and institutional problems. Data for this evaluation were collected via vehicle occupancy counts, travel time surveys, questionnaire surveys of auto drivers on the facility, interviews with officials, and observation of traffic.
