NAV-LINES--KEEPING IN SAFE WATERS WITH DIGIPLOT
The technique speeds up the conventional time tested piloting procedure and does not introduce new methodology that the watch officer may find difficult to grasp, or easy to ignore in times of stress. NAV-LINES provides a simple, easy-to-use integrated automatic radar plotting aid that can continously and directly define safe waters and potential collision threats on the same DIGIPLOT P.P.I. display. Rather than frequent, time consuming, error prone, tedious radio or radar position fixing, the lines, without manual involvement, continuously show the viewer "where the ship ought not to be" and the course to steer to avoid hazards. The Captain, navigator and pilot are thus provided a digital electronics aid to assist them in maintaining safe ship's passage in pilotage waters. The paper will explain the concept, its relative merits and also describe in detail the use of the NAV-LINE option for a typical situation of a ship entering a harbor from open sea and operating in confined coastal waters.
