NAVSTAR GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM

The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) will consist of a constellation of satellites, a Master Control Station and an unlimited number of user equipment in vehicles, ships, aircraft, satellites and manportables. The satellites will broadcast continuous positioning signals anywhere in the world. Each user will be able to determine precisely position to better than 10 meters and velocity to within a few centimeters per second, in three dimensions on a continuous basis and in all types of weather conditions. In addition, precise time to fractions of a micro-second will be available. The Department of Defense expects to have some 25,000 to 30,000 users in almost every military mission area. The Department of Commerce, Maritime Administration is investigating very low cost user equipment through the Joint Program Office.
