DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDING COMPONENTS WITH FIBRE REINFORCED POLYMERS: A NEW CANADIAN STANDARD

The Canadian Standards Association document CSA-8806, "Design of and Construction of Building Components with Fibre Reinforced Polymers" is introduced. This standard addresses not only the design of new buildings, but also retrofit and strengthening of existing building components. The approach taken of the development of the standard is outlined, the information and decisions pertaining to design/retrofit provisions and principles are summarized, and the material testing methodologies are touched on. The standard covers the following six subject areas: basic limit states design principles, material testing procedures, design provisions for reinforced and prestressed components, repair and retrofit of existing components, strengthening earthquake deficient elements, and site preparation and construction procedures.
