STRENGTHENING MONUMENTAL ARCHES AND VAULTS WITH FRP: LABORATORY TESTS AND FIRST APPLICATIONS

This paper presents results of research conducted in Italy, at the University of Perugia, on the problem of seismic strengthening of monumental arches and vaults. The working criteria using composite materials, in this case sheets of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), are illustrated. The interest in this technique came about from the examination of the types of collapse involving arches and vaults and from problems shown by structures strengthened with traditional methods. In formulating the criteria, attention was paid to the behavior of the vaults according to their constructional type and in particular to the type of texture and pattern.
