INVESTIGATION OF THE CREEP AND COMPRESSION STRENGTH OF SLAG STABILIZED MATERIALS

UNDERSOEKNING AV KRYPFOERMAAGA OCH TRYCKHAALLFASTHET HOS SLAGGSTA BILISERADE MATERIAL

This report is a study of properties of slag and cement stabilized materials. Properties studied were creep, compression strength and elastic modulus. From this the stability and flexibility were estimated. Materials tested were: slag bound blast furnace slag - merolit (laboratory and field), slag bound base gravel (laboratory and field) and cement stabilized gravel (laboratory). The following results were obtained: the creep compliance of the cement bound materials was smallest and that of the non-hardened slag bound materials was largest. Hardened merolit showed more creep than the cement bound materials, the elastic modulus of the merolit samples was about 5000 mpa, the slag stabilized materials hardened slower than the cement bound materials, no difference in the strength development of the materials stabilized by different slag types was observed, although the reactivity of the slags was different and the compression strength of hardened samples of merolit and slag stabilized gravel was nearly the same as that of cement stabilized gravel. Finally materials bound by merolit and cement were compared with respect to stability and flexibility: a merolit road base was less stable than a cement stabilized road base. Merolit was found to be more flexible than cement bound materials and probably flexible enough to resist thermally induced stresses without cracking. /TRRL/
