TRANSPORT PRIORITIES IN WALES
The population distribution and geography of Wales are described briefly. Most of the transport routes run from east to west, with the major urban areas on the south coast. The need to integrate land use planning with transport planning is emphasised. About a third of the population does not have access to a car. Plans include the reopening of some former railway lines, more transport links between north and south Wales, long distance buses with a major interchange point, increased access for vulnerable people, trunk road improvements to reduce congestion and pollution, and new roads to encourage economic regeneration. Introduction of the safe routes to schools initiative has been very popular. A lot of new infrastructure has been provided for cycling, including the Millennium Cycling Bridge across the Dovey Estuary. For the covering abstract see ITRD E112212.
