THE CHAMELEON AND PROTECTOR PROJECTS

This article gives an overview of thc work of two European research projects. CHAMELEON is a research-oriented project whose main objective is to develop a pre-crash sensor system to detect impending crashes in all road scenarios. The objectives are improvement of existing sensor performance, robustness and range; new strategies for activation and pre-warning of actuators such as airbags; integration of sensors; and development of a driver-independent system. PROTECTOR'S objectives are to develop an on-board sensor system able to detect less visible road objects; to study co-operation between vehicles and vulnerable road users; to extend lateral control support, including automatic manoeuvres to avoid collision; and to evaluate user acceptance and social impact. In both projects, different sensing technologies will be adopted to explore the surrounding road environment, detect obstacles and predict possible accident conditions; artificial vision, microwave radar, laser sensors, automatic vehicle classification and sensor fusion are mentioned.
