REPORT ON JOINT CONFERENCE ENO FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND BOARD OF CONSULTANTS, OCTOBER 22 AND 23, 1976. PART I-TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS OF THE FUTURE. PART II-THE ECONOMICS OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

This article reports on the joint conference of the ENO Foundation Board of Directors and Consultants, which was held in October of 1976. It is divided into two parts: Part I - Transportation systems of the future; and Part 2 - The Economics of Environmental Protection in Transportation. Part I discusses the nature of the transportation infrastructure in the year 2000. In order to control factors such as, changes in life style and the United States population growth, as well as the influence of future economic, environmental, and energy conditions, there is a need to relate the trends of future use to the various transportation modes. The article also discusses how any discussion of future transportation systems should not be limited to the movement of people but also should give equal consideration to the movement of products and raw materials. Freight is a vital aspect of the American economy and way of life. Specific freight modes provide services that are particularly desirable for certain types of shipments. Yet, as with passenger transport, the future of the freight mode depends on many other factors, including governmental policy and control. The presentations in the first part consider the federal role as it relates to the future of the various transport modes. Part II discusses the problems that have emerged in transportation activities because of environmental issues. Environmental protection in the United States is seriously affecting the cost of transportation and this issue is of deep concern to all who work in the field of transportation.
