CHARACTERISTICS OF PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS

A comprehensive analysis of a four-year urban pedestrian accident data was undertaken to investigate the role of various elements in terms of vehicular, roadway, environmental, and human factors in pedestrian accidents. The primary objective of the study was to propose and suggest policy changes and countermeasures which could be utilized by the engineers and planners in reducing pedestrian-automobile accidents in urban areas. The data were analyzed by use of contingency tables, and the most likely causative factors leading to pedestrian accidents were identified. The findings of the study have indicated that improvements are needed in most areas in order to make an urban environment relatively safe; however, the study revealed that the greatest emphasis should be placed on pedestrian and driver education. The recommendations of the study are discussed in the report. /SRIS/
