ROAD USER SATISFACTION SURVEY - FINAL REPORT
In this UK survey carried out for the Highways Agency, significant improvements in levels of satisfaction since 1997 are noted. Nearly three in five adults use the motorways or trunk roads at least once a week. There has been an increase in the proportion of short journeys (less than 10 miles) made on motorways and trunk roads since 1995. Journeys to work and shopping have increased while business journeys have decreased. The proportion of travellers feeling safe had increased and the proportion of journeys without congestion had increased but 5% of journeys experienced unacceptable congestion. The reduction in congestion is related to a reduction in the number of street works. Users were generally more satisfied with motorways than with trunk roads, with particular concern being a lack of emergency telephones on trunk roads. Business managers were particularly concerned about the speed and reliability of journeys. Motorway services were considered too expensive. Priorities for improvements, awareness of the road users' charter, and awareness of the Highways Agency Information Line are discussed. Concerning views on making longer journeys by public transport, more than 50% of respondents were put off by the cost and low reliability.
