OPTIMAL BRIDGE DESIGN ON SEAGOING MERCHANT VESSELS

This Report presents the findings of a research programme carried out between 1971 and 1973 with the object of providing guidelines towards an optimal bridge design. Special consideration has been given to ergonomic factors to guarantee a reasonalbe working environment under all conceivable conditions, including those where a single operator is in control. All the work elements occurring in a ship's bridge were allocated to three work stations, i.e. Work Station--Command; Work Station--Navigation; and Work Station--Safety. These work stations are grouped together within an area which is designated the work space. Recommendations for the design of work spaces and work stations are listed in the first part of the Report. The remaining chapters discuss the arrangement and design of radio antennae, lighting and marking of equipment, etc. Order from: BSRA as No. 48,458.
