RAC REPORT ON MOTORING 2002. GOING TOO FAST, GOING TOO SLOW?

This report details the services provided by the UK motoring organisation RAC and contains more detailed sections on: going too fast - the issue of speeding; going too fast - accidents on the road; going too slow - the problems of congestion; going too slow - reaction to congestion; living with the car; and cars and drivers in Britain. Each section reports the results of behaviour and attitudinal research by the RAC. New findings include that motorists are in favour of a lower speed limit for motorways in bad weather, speed cameras, banning mobile phone use in cars, and refresher training. They are unwilling to switch to public transport and consider too many cars and road works to be the causes of congestion. Improved public transport is seen as the answer to congestion. Views on road charging to enter London were mixed. Many motorists underestimated the cost of running their car. Changes in car ownership are documented. Appendix 1 gives research methodology and appendix 2 sources and acknowledgements. A cumulative index to topics covered in this report and previous reports back to 1989 is provided.
