CARS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT... AND DAY
Researchers are looking at ways to solve the problem of the bumps at the end of bridges. These bumps occur when the ground under one part of a bridge settles faster than the ground underneath a nearby section. When this happens, the bridge begins to bend. In Texas, about 25 percent of all bridges have such bumps. Solutions include ensuring that backfill used at bridge sites is properly compacted to reduce soil settling and installing concrete slabs to cover the bump zones.
