COOKING ON GAS

Developments in hydrogen fuelled vehicles are outlined. DaimlerChrysler has delivered the first of three zero-emission Mercedes-Benz Citaro 70 passenger hydrogen-fuelled buses to Madrid for testing. Toyota is actively testing hydrogen-powered vehicles and has opened the first of a series of hydrogen fuel stations in California. General Motors' HydroGen3 minivan was the first liquid-hydrogen fuelled vehicle to win Japan's approval to operate on its roads. DaimlerChrysler opened the first public hydrogen fuelling station in Reykjavik, Iceland. President Bush has pledged US$1.2 billion for hydrogen fuel research. A series of conferences have been held on the hydrogen economy. Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide has developed a composite gaseous hydrogen tank that doubled the driving range of previously certified tanks. The ways in which hydrogen fuelling might affect traffic technology and management are discussed. The problems for traffic managers associated with the high pressure or liquid cold of tanked hydrogen are considered.
