OIL BARRIERS IN TWO-DIMENSIONAL STATIONARY FLOW

The report presents results of drag measurements on two-dimensional oil barriers of different geometries exposed to a water current. Different oil quantities and qualities are supplied to the water. The drag coefficient of the barrier depends highly on the geometry of the barrier, while the oil affects the drag coefficient less. The geometry and behaviour of the oil slick in front of the barrier is discussed, and the observations are compared to results obtained by theory. The different modes of barrier failure are discussed. Loss due to entrainment is considered to be the most important failure mode. To prevent barrier failure due to entrainment, current velocities above 0.5 ms minus 1 perpendicular to the barier should be avoided. Under the simplifying assumptions made, model tests will reproduce the main features of an oil on water problem as far as the linear scaling ratio is not too large and the oil quantity is chosen properly.
