BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD: SAFETY ZONES AND TRAFFIC CONES

The basic objective of a temporary traffic management control plan is to allow the contractor to work within the public right of way safely and effectively whilst maintaining a safe and uniform flow of traffic. It is impossible for national standards to cover all scenarios. It is argued that in addition to engineering drawings, the overall scheme documentation should include detailed bespoke temporary traffic management designs. One of the main requirements of temporary traffic management drawings is clarity. Drawings need to show the equipment, including signs and cones, needed for each section of the work site: advance warning area, transition area, buffer area, work area and end of works area. Modern computer aided design (CAD) software lends itself to producing the temporary traffic management control plan. The advantages of using CAD over manual method are outlined. The development of CONE temporary traffic management software that is compliant with Chapter 8 of the UK Traffic Signs Manual is described. Further versions of CONE have been developed for use in the US, New Zealand and Eire.
