NEW HA ADVICE NOTE WILL BRING PASSIVE SAFETY ISSUES CENTRE STAGE

A new Advice Note entitled the 'Use of Passively Safe Signposts to BS EN 12767' will be published by the Highways Agency in May 2004. The Advice Note TA89/04 sets out where passive safe signposts may be used, the selection of the appropriate post type, size limits for tubular steel posts or aluminium posts without safety barrier provision, designing for wind loading, signpost foundation requirements and sign face requirements and specification of signposts to BS EN 12767. Passively safe sign posts, Lattix signposts from Signfix, were introduced in the UK by Chester County Council to reduce the number of killed and seriously injured within the county. They were then used on the A43 Towcester by-pass scheme. Following research at TRL, the Highways Agency clarified the requirements for safety fence protection of sign posts. The Advice Note said that passively safe signposts were an appropriate solution for roads with speed limits of 50 mph or more and for lower speed limit locations where safety barriers to signs would otherwise be appropriate.
