THE ALIGNMENT BETWEEN INTEGRATED TRANSPORT PLANS AND THE PREPARATION OF INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT PLANS IN SOUTH AFRICA

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the alignment principles in Integrated Transport Plan (ITP) formulation and its interface with Integrated Development Plan (IDP) preparation as an instrument of spatial change, integration, and development within the local spatial systems in South Africa. The alignment between ITP and IDP is of critical importance for the integration of the urban form. It is evaluated against the historical context of spatial and development planning; the interface between integrated transport and development planning; guiding principles for integrated transport and development plans; spatial development frameworks; and urban integration. Improved management practices and process alignment is critical to promote urban integration and sustainable urban development.
