BEYOND THE CURRENT ENVELOPE: CONTEXT-SENSITIVE STREET DESIGN
Street design has advanced over time from clearing trails to building highly efficient grade-separated expressways. Although roadway design advancements have consistently aided mobility, these advancements have not always had positive impacts on livability in immediate vicinities. There have been periods when roads were widened to the maximum widths possible in the name of adding capacity. This practice either removed amenities or the opportunity to have amenities. In many cases major roads now do a good job of moving motor vehicles and providing vehicular access. However, these roads are not good neighbors to adjacent development and do not promote livability in the immediate vicinity of development. Context-sensitive street design has recently emerged as an attractive alternative for urban planners to consider when designing highways to be more compatible with and supportive of the environments through which they pass.
