PATTERN OF INJURIES IN HELMETED MOTORCYCLISTS IN SINGAPORE
This study was undertaken to determine the pattern of injuries sustained by helmeted motorcyclists in Singapore as they were admitted to the emergency department. Adult victims of motor vehicular incidents (MVI) at an urban public hospital emergency department from 1 December 1998 to 31 May 1999 were interviewed. Data collected were demographic, nature of injury, ambulance care, emergency and hospital care, outcome and final diagnoses. The study results confirmed that compared with other MVI victims, fewer helmeted motorcyclists sustained head injuries. When a head injury occurs in helmeted motorcyclists, it tends to be severe. Motorcyclists also remain vulnerable to extremity injury and to severe chest injury.
