A COMBINED PASSENGER/FREIGHT INTERMODAL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

Intermodal transportation can be described as the coordinated sequential use of multiple modes of transportation. Together with infrastructure improvements and technological innovations, intermodalism has made container freight transportation more productive and efficient in terms of cost, service time, speed, reliability and safety. A typical intermodal freight transportation system involves a chain of trips using modes such as ocean ships, trains, and trucks. The purpose of this paper is to address some critical issues facing the public transportation and the freight transportation industries and to present a solution which has the potential to improve productivity and service quality for certain passenger and freight services. Presented is a model which can be used for high speed intermodal transportation of time sensitive or express cargo shipments.
