OPORTO PLANS SECOND EXPANSION PHASE

Oporto Metro's Blue Line celebrated its first full year of operation in Portugal in January 2004. More than six million passengers used the 12-km line in the year. The line links Trindade in the city centre with Matosinhos on the coast and has 18 stations. Part of the line runs on the track of the former narrow-gauge network operated by Portuguese Railways (CP). The Blue Line will form part of a 70-km network of four routes. The schedules for the construction and opening of the Red Line, Green Line and Yellow Line are outlined. A fleet of 28 seven-section Eurotrams, built by Bombardier Transportation, is in service and 72 LRVs are on order. Each low floor, air-conditioned vehicle can carry up to 216 passengers with seats for 80 people. The ticketing system is based on contactless smart cards. Bus operator STCP and CP's suburban trains division will also adopt the same system. The metro's depot and traffic centre are at Guifoes.
