PEDESTRIAN TRAINING
This article describes a scheme developed in Scotland to introduce younger children to advanced safe road crossing procedures without exposing them to potentially dangerous roadside situations. An original policy provided practical basic roadside training to children 5-7 years old in an urban area. Computer-generated traffic scenarios were then developed, where children helped child characters to follow designated routes safely. The program enables feedback on the results of inappropriate decisions - a narrow miss or being knocked down. The training programme was undertaken by three groups of children, 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10 years. Results showed that children's roadside judgements improved substantially: repeat testing showed further improvement. The authors conclude that the computer simulation should be used in conjuction with basic roadside training.
