COUNTING TO SEVEN
This article explains the progress of the new Eurocode 7 on geotechnical design, and how it will integrate with and replace British standards. Part 2, concerning ground investigation and testing, covers planning, sampling and measurements, field and laboratory tests, and reports. This is closely aligned to the British standards BS 5930 and BS 1377 and may necessitate the removal of some parts of these. A number of guidance documents are being prepared to help engineers to adapt to the new Eurocodes. Each country is required to implement the Eurocodes unaltered, although permitted local changes can be implemented as a national annex. The British National Annex will address aspects of alternative values or classes, alternative procedures, country-specific data on ground and climate conditions, and decisions on the application of informative annexes. Co-existence of European and national standards should not exceed three years.
