THREE OF THE BEST

Three short rail bridges have been constructed near to Modena as part of Italy's high-speed rail link between Milan to Bologna. The bridges cross the rivers Secchia and Panaro and the Brenner motorway in quick succession. The contract for the formwork and shoring for the construction was awarded to a consortium consisting of Peiniger Roro and Hunnebeck Italia. Each of the structures has three spans. Modular advancing shoring components were used to construct an overhead system that can be moved longitudinally and laterally. The design of the advancing shoring is outlined. All of the shoring movements are performed by centrally controlled hydraulic systems. Teflon sliding bearings were used to reduce the frictional resistance during the displacement process. The complex geometry and above average concrete pressure led to steel being selected for the formwork.
