Two slurry TBMs, nicknamed Lewis and Clark, are being used to break through the soft saturated deposits of the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. are It is believed that this is the first time slurry TBMs are being used in the U.S. These efforts are part of a program designed to prevent storm water overflows from the combined sewer systems in Portland on the east and west sides of the Willamette. The article gives detailed information on the machinery, tunneling procedures, and progress to date.
