UNTHROTTLED OPEN-CHAMBER STRATIFIED CHARGE ENGINES
The potential for exercising control over the local fuel-air ratio and the mixing rate between fuel and air makes the open-chamber stratified charge engine extremely flexible in its combustion process and offers possibilities for a considerable degree of in-chamber control over exhaust emissions. This potential is not fully realized in current stratified charge engine designs. More detailed knowledge is needed concerning the various mixing processes (fuel jet air entrainment, diffusion, mixing due to swirl/density gradient), and innovative thinking is required in other critical areas (injection nozzle design, ignition of lean mixtures, control of cylinder air motion and turbulence. In view of the increasing requirements for fuel economy and the possibility of future changes in fuel quality, continued development seems adequately justified.
