TSA LAUNCHES PILOT
The test program lauched on 4 May 2004 by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is meant to measure the potential for explosives screening of passengers and bags traveling on U.S. trains. Amtrak and Maryland Rail Commuter Service (MARC) passengers boarding at the New Carrolton train station will be screened as a part of the pilot project designed to make rail travel safer. The New Carrolton project is the first of the program's three phases. The next phase will be conducted at Washington's Union Station and will include items placed in storage; the final stage will involve on-board screening with dogs. To determine the success of the pilot, TSA will ultimately evaluate the effects of wait time and through-put, in addition to testing how new devices operate in an open air environment, as are most train and metro stations.
