TRIALS WITH A CRC + BBM3 TYPE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE ON THE RASSATS-FAVRAUDS BY-PASS

This article describes experimental road section construction to test the in situ behaviour of the innovative pavement structure CRC + BBM3 (continously reinforced concrete with bitumen bound material). Validation of the structural design method involved comparing the real service life of the pavement with that predicted by design theory. The project is described by the contracting agency and by the contractor. The process of organising the project and preparing the tender documents is outlined. Work took place between June and September 1998 and involved prior placement of reinforcement bars, production and placing of the cement concrete, etching, and curing. Moulded longitudinal joints were used in the centre line of the pavement, heavy joints at the ends of an underpass, and retarded joints at each concreting interface.
